New “Special meeting” called for
Sunday June 8, 2014 at 3:00 PM
This meeting is to address:
Revenue and expense reporting.
The Board of Directors of the Alano Club of St. Joseph is having a meeting to consider some accounting changes. A review of revenue and expense reporting is the topic. This meeting is as much about education regarding accounting practices as it is about changing practices. Our Treasurer has served in his position for about seven years – this is because we trust him beyond measure. This meeting is simply about how we report revenue and expenses – and thus ultimately about how we file tax returns.
Sunday, June 1, 2014, at 3:00 PM.
Alano Club Main Hall.
Revenue and expense reporting
A special meeting of the Board does not require a ten day notice. The topic is limited to changing some accounting practices.
- Standard Principles of Accounting are necessary for any 501-C-3 corporation.
- Standard Principles of Accounting are necessary for any 501-C-3 corporation that receives government grant money.
- Standard Principles of Accounting protect us from filing misleading tax returns.
- Standard Principles of Accounting limit opportunity for fiscal mischief, or even criminal embezzlement.
While this is a meeting of the Board – it is not a closed meeting. Anyone may attend.
The final ruling of the City Health Department is clear: Smoking is to be banned at Alano. The final judgement hinged on a simple question: Is the general public allowed in the building? The simple honest answers is yes – the public is allowed in the building.
Smoking shall be banned effective at midnight June 6, 2014.
The Alano shall not be fined because we shall follow the directions on dealing with smoking in the building.
The following is an excerpt from the letter from the City Health Department regarding our responsibility:
Penalty information (also from the City Health Department and the Legal Department):
Special Meeting: Sunday, May 18, 2014, 4:00 PM Alano Main Hall, all are invited and everyone may participate in the discussion. Motions and vote by dues paying members only.
As most are aware the City of St. Joseph passed a smoking ban by popular vote on April 8, 2014. Questions abound. The Alano Club of St. Joseph, Missouri, Inc. meets all of the criteria of a Membership Club. However, as with all other membership clubs in St. Joseph, there are extenuating qualifications regarding the application of the City Smoking Ban.
Many people in Alano were once afflicted with debilitating addiction. The addiction found us manipulating, lying, minimizing, and avoiding rules and regulations. We walked with the fear of being caught doing something we were not supposed to be doing. With recovery comes the serenity of knowing we no longer have to look over our shoulder in constant vigilance – ever fearful of being caught. In the case of the Smoking Ban we shall determine the law’s application to us and we shall follow the rules. We choose today to no longer live in fear.
Included in this post are a copy of the letter sent to 175 businesses, including Alano. The letter explains the responsibilities of the Owner/Manager of any establishment covered by the smoking ban. Attached to the letter was a six page document titled “Frequently Asked Questions”. We scanned that document and edited for questions directly related to Membership Clubs. Those edits are also included in this post.

Excerpts from “Frequently Asked Questions”:
If Alano is subject to the Smoking Ban then there are penalties for non-compliance. Again, from the “Frequently Asked Questions”.:
Please come to the Special Meeting and express your thoughts.
